MAK: Eva Schlegel’s In Between
A spectacular installation dealing with the theme of flying and falling between success and failure, at the very edge of that which is possible, stands at the center of the exhibition Eva Schlegel. In Between at the MAK Exhibition Hall. This installation represents an attempt to capture visually that which is fleeting, but will nonetheless be in the truest sense palpable and audible, confronting the viewer directly with projected images, image disturbances and wind sounds, and taking up the entire airspace (of the MAK).
Visibility, Potency and Meaning: Making Sense of Art at the Crosshairs
Since I made my first appearance on the Art21 blog about six weeks ago, commenting on the now-infamous censoring of David Wojnarowicz’s video A Fire in My Belly at the National Portrait Gallery’s Hide/Seek exhibition, the incident has continued to make waves. Among many blogs, Hyperallergic and ArtInfo have followed the story closely, providing careful [...]

“We choose to LOOK at LIFE all the TIME, and though we realize that they are in one sense adult comic books, they are also full of things that speak…” For Sister Corita, the world of signs, advertising slogans, and the culture of logos was not just some vast wasteland, but a sphere that supplied her with input for an art nourished by everyday life.
Just like the movies?
Current apexart resident, video artist Donghyun Min from South Korea, will talk about how his time in New York has changed his understanding of the role the city has played in countless films.

Mr. Min will use clips from his favorite New York movies to illustrate how they informed his expectations of New York, and what his real-life experiences were upon arrival. Countless travellers have fostered intimate relationships with the Big Apple through its depiction in movies, giving them a sense of intimacy before they see the city first-hand.

Join us for a guided tour of New York as seen on the big screen.
Making Sense of Interdisciplinary Practice (Art, Space + Nature=?)
Art Space + Nature is a unique, interdisciplinary course that was started in 2003. Seven years later, the course’s objectives continue to be in a flexible and formative state. Unlike most degree courses, which are classified by formalist media (i.e. sculpture, painting, printmaking, etc) Art, Space +Nature’s trans-departmental qualities make it difficult to describe. The [...]

Tied to creative abilities, to psychic states that deviate from the “normal” to a greater or lesser extent, these artists, who are extraordinary in the literal sense, reveal in their works surprising, often unexpected things. They shed light on the limits and contradictions of human existence and convey a deep sense of disquiet about the relationships between reality and fantasy – and not just in the work of art.

If, as it is commonly assumed, the global political and cultural changes of 1989 left the world bereft of a sense of politics as striving towards a future—a horizon as it were—then we are left with the perpetual caretaking of the existing state of things.
