Elisa Kreisinger is a video remix artist, writer, curator, and educator whose work often addresses feminist, queer, and social issues. While there is a long history of appropriation-based political critique in the arts, and though many of these works long to invoke social change, they are often prevented from doing so, locked up and stowed [...]

New guest blogger: Joe Grimm
Thanks to Lindsay Lawson for her thoughtful posts. Up next is Joe Grimm. Joe (b. 1978, Safety Harbor, FL) is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with light and sound. In his performances, sculptures, videos, and constructed situations, he appropriates material from enlightenment-era metaphysics, contemporary pop music, and the troubled legacy of minimalism — insisting always [...]
Weekly Update – A great big Woot! from Tyler’s graduating MFA’s
Maybe it’s spring or the waning recession, but Woot!, the group show at the Ice Box consisting of graduating MFAs from the Tyler School of Art, is a nice change from the art world’s current obsession with noir-ish nightmares. Or maybe it’s this particular class of students that makes this show so fun and friendly. With rambunctious works [...]
Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg: Art and Fashion. Between Skin and Clothing
Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg
5 March–7 August 2011
The exhibition explores the relation between art and fashion. Since the sixties art and fashion share the same avant-garde feeling. From then on fashion no longer expresses power, money and social class. Instead it starts to express art and culture. Fashion and popular visual cultures—like pop art—became from the sixties on the new visual aesthetics of society. Fashion and Art became in the same way conceptual.
Weekly Update – First Friday to do -Bambi’s last opening at the Piazza
In January, when the sprinklers went off unexpectedly in Bambi Gallery and damaged some of its art, Bambi proprietress Candace Karch decamped, taking her February show to another location. Now, Karch says, Bambi will migrate permanently out of its location at the Piazza after her March show. But this is not the end of Bambi—the [...]

Public Art Fund, New York’s leading presenter of artists’ projects, new commissions, installations, and exhibitions in public spaces, is pleased to announce its spring 2011 exhibitions: a large, multidirectional archway by Eva Rothschild; a monument to Pop icon Andy Warhol by Rob Pruitt; and a career survey of structures by the seminal artist Sol LeWitt.
Weekly update – Cheer up! Winter’s over in New American Voices II at the FWM
Crazy-happy collage paintings, mournful costumes, wizardly sculptures, and candy-colored sweaters with pleats — “New American Voices” at the Fabric Workshop and Museum is a four-course feast. The works — by four featured artists who were in residence at the FWM recently — don’t really go together, but each artist is given so much space it’s [...]
JD Walsh
JD Walsh Work from Slow Fade / Double Waltz. “Walsh is an artist who navigates smoothly between mediums while leaving a trail of great works. He’s a kind of mad scientist mixing up a fresh pop brew of interactivity, projection, appropriation, music, origami, and installation. Whether he’s playing a search engine or a guitar (clearly, [...]
Rethinking landscapes–Carrie Dickason and Mike Hein at Grizzly Grizzly
One of the many excellent shows I saw First Friday was at Grizzly Grizzly, the little gallery that could. A surprising pairing of artists, Carrie Dickason and Mike Hein, impressed with the two artists’ engagement with materials and ideas. Dickason, MFA Cranbrook in fiber, lives in Maine, and her work evinces a love of the [...]

5 Under 40 at Sande Webster Gallery
5 Under 40, the show at Sande Webster Gallery this month, unsurprisingly consists of five artists under the age of 40. One of those showing his work, Philippe Jean, is also the curator of the show. The questions and practices asserted by these artists demonstrate both wry social criticism as well as strong visual references. [...]
