Kölnischer Kunstverein: Kerstin Bratsch and DAS INSTITUT

Kölnischer Kunstverein
5 February – 20 March 2011

When You See Me Again It Won’t Be Me is Kerstin Brätsch’s laconic title for another of her works. The paintings of New York based artist Kerstin Brätsch alternate between a distant third-person perspective and an enthusiastic, slogan-like voice promoting the Kerstin Brätsch “brand” with titles like Kerstin Kopy Kommerzial.

Jim Nutt: Coming Into Character is a retrospective that emphasizes the development of these important paintings through their precedents in his own work, on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, from January 29 to May 29, 2011.

Mannheimer Kunstverein: Asgar/Gabriel

Mannheimer Kunstverein
Until 13 March 2011

Asgar/Gabriel are masters of confusion with allusions to art history, visual mystifications and overall terrific painting. Remarkably, the typical male dominance which is prevalent in most paintings is broken due to the fact that almost exclusively women are portrayed. The future is female.

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago: Luc Tuymans

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
October 2, 2010 – January 9, 2011

Luc Tuymans (born 1958) is considered to be one of the most significant painters working today, and his distinctive visual style and approach to issues of history and memory have influenced an entire generation of younger artists. Interested in the after-effects of the most traumatic events of the last and present century and their representation in the mass media, Tuymans uses a muted palette to create paintings that are at once sumptuous and subtle, enigmatic and disarmingly stark.
