The Schaulager in Basel is already a very special institution and exhibition space. With the solo show “Francis Alÿs: Fabiola“, Schaulager has realized also an unusual project. Instead of presenting artist Francis Alÿs collection of images of Saint Fabiola in its own premises, Schaulager staged the exhibition in the Haus zum Kirschgarten, once Basel’s foremost [...]

Lives and Works in Berlin | Absalon at Kunst-Werke
It was back in 2005 when I first encountered the work of Absalon at Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof in a exhibition called Fast Nichts – Minimal Artworks from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection (fast nichts means “almost nothing” in German). In many ways, if you’ve been to Dia: Beacon, you’ve seen a good portion of Fast [...]
The Phillips Collection: 2011 Intersections Artists Include Balasubramaniam, deSouza, and Borosom
The Phillips Collection
The collaborative team probes gender and identity transformation in a three-channel video projection, The Coronation. Evoking a medieval altarpiece, the work occupies a gallery on the second floor of the Phillips house and establishes a visual dialogue with Georges Rouault’s Tragic Landscape (1930) from the permanent collection.

Open Enrollment: An Ordinary Day
At 7:30 am, the alarm clock on my Nokia cell phone rouses me from sleep. In preparation of the minus double-digit weather, I layer like a Renaissance oil painting —two pairs of tights, two pairs of socks, long underwear, black legwarmers over my jeans, one turtleneck and one wool sweater. My eyes and feet are [...]

Dawn breaks thousands of windows in the city: Poets and Painters in Collaboration at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery
By Thomas Devaney The “Tibor de Nagy Gallery Painter and Poets” exhibition is dream-like. The dream we enter is the salon atmosphere of the gallery’s early days, creating an overall effect of a group portrait of a handful of individuals who reached out to each other through their art. The exhibition reveals how these poets [...]

Ben Volta’s mural–Home That Was
How many times have I passed by a demolished row house in Philadelphia, and stared at the wallpaper exposed to the elements on the neighboring brick wall. The weathered map of the rooms and stairs outlined on the standing house’s side tells a story of loss and memory and survival. Artist Ben Volta and an [...]
