Interview: Edward Maeder’s paper dresses, in Mt. Airy
Edward Maeder is the former curator of Costumes and Textiles at the L.A. County Museum of Art and later at historic Deerfield. Maeder has more recently taken up the mantle of artist and “needleman.” His exquisite paper dress creations are made of Q-tips, coffee filters and other found papers. The inspiration for these art objects [...]
Weekly Update – Jay Walker’s sartorial ghosts at JOG Gallery
Jay Walker’s sartorial-themed paintings, drawings and sculpture at James Oliver Gallery do not make for a cheery show although what’s on view is worth a visit. The life-sized depictions of clothing in stark relief against voids of space are brooding and iconic. In shades of black, white and grey, the hoodies, Matrix-like dusters, a hospital [...]
Gore and Folklore in Bushwick: Lenny Reibstein at English Kills

John Ahearn, the acclaimed sculptor, and long-time collaborator Rigoberto Torres will present iconic sculptures that use plaster or fiberglass to create life-casts of figures. Originally trained as a painter, Ahearn began making casts of his friends and neighbors at the suggestion of his apprentice and later collaborator Rigoberto Torres. His first casts, taken of the people in his South Bronx neighborhood, were exhibited in 1980. He created his sculptures from predominantly working-class subjects near his home. His work is a social commentary on the American scene, portraying individuals in ordinary settings complete with specific attributes of the sitter, from clothing to hairstyles. Aljira is pleased to welcome Emerge alumni Jayson Keeling as the guest curator who has selected never before seen video to be included in the exhibition.
