la maison rouge: Tous cannibales, Chiharu Shiota, Stephane Thidet

la maison rouge
Until 15 May 2011

The exhibition’s curator has chosen pieces for the most part by young artists working independently of each other on the concept of incorporation. A body of contemporary works (photography, video, installation, sculpture, drawing and painting) finds echoes in a historic perspective (photographic document , illuminated texts, engravings and ritual objects). Together, they show how the theme of anthropophagy has persisted and evolved through time and place.

The Late, Dearly Missed Kathryn Hixson on Comedic Aggression in 70′s Art

Critic and teacher Kathryn Hixson is the one person I’ve had in my life who felt like a mentor in the deepest sense. She was wickedly funny, challenging, and yet warm. When she passed away this last fall, she left me feeling unmoored — I realized how very much I relied on her presence, her [...]

Judith Schaechter on art and craft at the Philadelphia Art Alliance

There’s nothing like ducking out of a stormy evening straight into a former mansion – known to most city dwellers as the Philadelphia Art Alliance. On the evening of March 10, the black of an overcast sky merged into the quiet gray of a brick façade, the sleek wetness of concrete pavements became the brilliant [...]

Limerick City Gallery of Art : How Capital Moves by Kennedy Browne

Limerick City Gallery of Art OFF-SITE
25 March–6 May 2011

How Capital Moves is a new body of work by artist duo Kennedy Browne. Originally commissioned for the Łódź Biennale, Poland (2010) the work is partly a response to a computer factory relocating to Łódź from Limerick, Ireland. Kennedy Browne, with respect to the critical and conceptual use of fiction within this work, has replaced all references to the actual name of this multinational with the pseudonym The Company. As such the narratives, places and characters evoked in the work are both general and particular.

On View Now | The Truth in “True Grit”: Or, Everything I Really Need to Know about Postmodernism I Learned from Joel and Ethan Coen

In the lead up to this year’s Academy Awards, I found myself on a few occasions defending Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit as something other than simply a good remake of a classic western.  My argument in defense of their Oscar-nominated film more or less hinged on the basic point that True Grit can [...]
