The Sharjah Art Foundation announces recipients of the 2011 Sharjah Biennial Prize as the 10th edition of the Sharjah Biennial, Plot for a Biennial, continues with eight weeks of cutting-edge exhibitions, film, performance, music and publications, March 16–May 16, 2011. Honorees of this year’s award totaling 30,000 USD include Trisha Donnelly, Imran Qureshi, Rania Stephan, Rayyane Tabet, and Jalal Toufic as selected by a jury of distinguished members.

Inside Out: Photography After Form includes over 80 photographs from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection. It is one of a series of exhibitions that is organized on a yearly basis from the collection. For the first time in a few years, the exhibition focuses solely on the medium of photography and includes a significant portion of the photographic holdings from the collection, including many new acquisitions.

To date the Art Foundation Mallorca has collected nearly 200 works from all over the world. Although painting and photography predominate, the collection also includes drawings, sculptures and installation works. For the upcoming exhibition, some of the highlights are two sculpture-installations, the “LateNightLady”, 2009 by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto (Rio de Janeiro 1964), and the disturbing life size “Female Sleepwalker”, 2008 by Tony Matelli (Chicago 1971).

Index shows works by Marcel Broodthaers (Belgium, 1924-76) and Karl Larsson (Sweden, born 1977) in an exhibition entitled Parrot. The presentation of Broodthaers – poet, filmmaker and one of the 20th century’s most important European conceptual artists – is concentrated and dense in view of the artist’s intense and short career that left a wide range of comprehensive and complex oeuvres.

My work is an observation of the parallels between photography and theater. In both we enter a black space and an image appears. What is seen is at once, simply, itself and what it seems to be.
In the past, the work focused entirely on the performer in the spotlight. In this series of photographs entitled [...]
